What to expect on an Everglades airboat tour

The airboat ride
Airboats are built for the Everglades: a shallow flat hull and a giant fan that pushes them over grass and just inches of water where a normal boat can’t go. They’re loud (you’ll get ear protection) and they can move fast, then idle quietly so your captain can spot gators sunning on the bank and herons stalking the shallows.
The wildlife
The stars are the American alligators — you’ll almost certainly see several — plus turtles, anhingas, egrets, herons and, in winter, clouds of wading birds. Full rundown on Everglades wildlife.
The wildlife show
Back at the park, most tours include an alligator or wildlife demonstration — an educational (and slightly theatrical) close-up with gators and other native animals. It’s popular with kids and rounds out the visit.
