What to wear on an Everglades airboat tour

Short answer: wear light, breathable clothing, bring sun protection (hat, sunglasses, sunscreen) and insect repellent, and put on closed shoes. Airboats are loud and fast, so secure your hat and bring a light layer — the wind on the water is cooler than you expect. Most operators hand out ear protection.
The essentials
- Light clothing — it’s hot and humid; quick-dry fabrics are ideal.
- Sun protection — hat, sunglasses and high-SPF sunscreen; there is no shade on the water.
- Insect repellent — mosquitoes are fierce in the wet season (summer); less so in winter.
- Closed shoes — sandals can blow off; trainers are safer on a fast airboat.
- A light layer — the wind makes the ride cooler than standing still.
- Ear protection — usually provided, but bring your own if you’re sensitive to noise.
What to leave behind
Skip anything loose that could blow away — wide-brim hats without a strap, scarves, loose papers. Keep phones and cameras on a strap or in a zipped pocket; the spray and speed are not kind to dropped electronics.
